Here are a few helpful things for those years between newborn and adolescence.
Well child visits are one of the most important services that we provide. As parents, we want to protect our children from everything. One way to protect your child from illness is through preventive care. We advocate for well child visits and immunizations from infancy throughout adolescence.
A well child visit allows our providers to collaborate with the parent/guardian and family to develop mental, physical and social health.
During the well child visit, your provider may discuss any of the following areas:
Growth and development
Immunizations
Nutrition
Behavior
Hearing and vision
Adolescence
Medication education
Specialty referrals
Reading with your child
Any concerns that you have
Different insurances pay for well child visits on slightly different schedules. Feel free to call our office and we will help you figure out when your child needs to come in. In general, we recommend well visits at the following ages:
2 weeks
2 months
4 months
6 months
9 months
12 months
15 months and/or 18 months
2 years
Once a year at all ages over 2 years.
Car seats are extremely important and they are the law. Children between the ages of one and five or under 40 pounds must be placed in a forward-facing car seat. Notice the “OR”. They need to be at least 40 lbs to turn around. The AAP says it’s important for parents not to transition their children out of rear-facing restraints too quickly. Rear-facing devices are the safest seats for infants and toddlers. Recent studies suggest rear-facing restraints can reduce the risk of traumatic injuries in crashes by at least 70 percent. Between the ages of five and six, all children must be placed in a booster seat. Children between six and 12 years old can legally wear the car's seat belt in the back seat. Your child should not sit in the front seat until they are 13 years old.
Asthma is a common childhood disease. Many times children grow out of it as they get older. We want to make sure they get the best care. We hold an asthma clinic twice a month at our Adolescent Clinic in Sheffield. We can do Pulmonary Function Tests to assess your child's breathing ability. We make sure children are doing well on their maintenance medications and have the refills they need. We want to keep our patients well and out of the emergency room. Erica Jantzen, CRNP specializes in asthma and will take excellent care of your child through this clinic.
